7 Tips for Drying Wet Carpet and Preventing Mold Growth

Act fast, dry faster: your step-by-step plan

It starts innocently enough. A pipe leaks under the sink. The washing machine decides today's the day. Or maybe San Diego finally got some real rain and water crept under the back door. Whatever the cause, wet carpet is one of those problems that demands your attention right now, not tomorrow.

Here's the thing most people don't realize: the carpet itself is often the easy part. It's what happens underneath, in the padding and the subfloor, where the real trouble begins. Mold can start forming in as little as 24 to 48 hours. So if you're reading this after a water incident, good. You're already ahead of the problem.

These seven tips will walk you through exactly what to do, step by step, so you can protect your carpet and your home.

1. Get the water source handled first

This one sounds obvious, but it's worth saying out loud: drying a wet carpet means nothing if the source of the moisture is still active. Before you do anything else, make sure the leak is stopped, the appliance is off, and the entry point is sealed. Everything else builds on this.

2. Remove standing water immediately

If there's visible pooling, use a wet/dry vacuum to pull it up as fast as possible. Do multiple passes. The more water you remove mechanically in the first hour, the less work the drying process has to do. Towels and mops help at the edges, but for any significant saturation, a wet vac is your best tool.

3. Lift the carpet if you can

This is the step most homeowners skip, and it's the one that leads to mold. Pulling back the carpet, even just in the affected corner or section, lets you assess the padding underneath. Carpet padding holds water like a sponge and almost never dries out completely while it's still in place. In most cases, the pad needs to come out entirely. It's a painful reality, but it's far less painful than remediating mold six weeks later.

4. Run air movers and dehumidifiers, not just fans

A ceiling fan or an open window is not going to cut it here. You need air moving directly across the wet surface at a low angle, and you need something pulling the moisture out of the air at the same time. Rental dehumidifiers are widely available and make a dramatic difference. Run them continuously and empty them frequently. In San Diego's coastal climate, ambient humidity can slow drying significantly if you're not actively pulling moisture from the air.

5. Don't skip the subfloor check

Once the carpet and padding are up, put your hand on the subfloor. Does it feel cool or damp? Does it look discolored? If the water got deep enough to saturate the subfloor, that surface needs to dry completely before anything goes back down. Rushing this step is how people end up with mold growing beneath brand new flooring.

6. Use antimicrobial treatment before reinstalling anything

Once everything is genuinely dry, including the subfloor, apply an antimicrobial spray designed for flooring applications. This step is inexpensive insurance against any spores that may have started before you caught the problem. Let it dry fully before reinstalling carpet or laying new padding.

7. Know when to call it

If the water was contaminated (from a sewer backup or flooding from outside), if the area is large, or if you've noticed any musty smell even after drying, this is the moment to bring in a professional. Some situations are genuinely beyond DIY, and there's no shame in knowing where that line is. Our flooring services team has helped plenty of San Diego homeowners work through water-damaged floors and figure out the best path forward, whether that's a repair, a re-stretch, or a full replacement.

A note on replacement

Sometimes the carpet can be saved. Other times, especially if there was a delay before drying began, or if the flooding was significant, replacement is the smarter and more economical long-term choice. Fresh carpet installation with new padding, properly installed over a fully dried subfloor, gives you a clean start without the worry of hidden moisture problems lingering in your home.

The good news is that acting quickly and following these steps gives your carpet the best possible chance of a full recovery. Time is everything with water damage. The sooner you move, the better your outcome.
